Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches (AA) is a rigorous blend of pure and applied mathematics, with a focus on the analytical side. It remains a challenging program that demands strong conceptual understanding, confident algebraic manipulation, and sharp problem-solving skills. It's the perfect foundation for students aiming to pursue further studies in mathematics or science, keeping plenty of university options open.

Course Structure and Content

The IB Math AA course is divided into five main topics:

  • Number & Algebra

  • Functions

  • Geometry & Trigonometry

  • Statistics & Probability

  • Calculus

While each topic is essential, there’s a special emphasis on the connections between functions, trigonometry, and calculus. These areas are key to developing the analytical thinking required by the course.

At the end of the course, AA SL students sit for Paper 1 and Paper 2, both covering the full curriculum.

  • Paper 1 (90 minutes): A non-calculator exam that emphasizes algebraic manipulation and inquiry. This paper tests your conceptual understanding and reasoning.

  • Paper 2 (90 minutes): In this calculator-required paper, you’ll explore mathematical problems using technology, focusing on inquiry, reasoning, and interpretation.

HL students also write a Paper 3 that is a one hour paper that consists of two extended response questions that explore HL topics in great depth. Papers include short-answer and extended-response questions, testing a wide range of mathematical skills. Additionally, all students must complete an internal assessment known as the exploration. This is your chance to apply math from the course to a topic of personal interest.

Tips for Success

  • Clear communication: Always show your work clearly. Accurate mathematical communication is crucial for securing full marks.

  • Simplify everything: Simplified answers make further steps easier and help avoid losing marks on non-simplified solutions.

  • Use previous parts: In long questions, solutions from earlier parts often help with later ones—always look for links!
